Starting any new endeavor in life is an intimidating task, especially when surrounded by people who already have years of experience. For this reason, the first few visits to a CrossFit gym can be a bit uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be.
When looking for a CrossFit gym in Milwaukee, it’s important to find a place that’s warm and welcoming. At CrossFit Funky, we have everything a first-timer needs to make the first step on the rewarding journey of CrossFit.
Here’s everything a beginner should know about the first visits to CrossFit Funky.
What Beginners Can Expect From the First Lessons
Naturally, newcomers aren’t expected to immediately jump into the deep end of the pool. Instead, beginners will learn the basics of CrossFit with Chris Aiello, CrossFit Funky’s head coach and owner.
These basics make up the On-Ramp program, where we teach the 9 Fundamental movements of CrossFit, CrossFit methodology & how to scale movements. Our On-Ramp program also includes five personal coaching sessions, one month of unlimited classes, access to our private Facebook group, and our Paleo meal plans.
During these early stages, CrossFit can seem the hardest, especially for individuals who aren’t in shape. However, CrossFit Funky boasts a friendly, knowledgeable staff that can support newcomers through even the most arduous hours.
Programming is Flexible for All Experience Levels
The programming at CrossFit Funky is designed for users of all experience levels, which means it’s entirely possible to jump right in. Once a person starts becoming comfortable with the program, there are options to scale up and get a more intensive workout.
In the same fashion, it’s also possible to scale the workout down if a person feels uneasy or intimidated. Members can also scale workouts based on the individual energy levels on a particular day.
We’ve all had mornings when we wake up and feel like we could lift an SUV, as well as mornings when lifting our own head is an impossible task. Whatever the situation is, our programming allows our members to choose what is best for the day.
Everyone Starts Out as a Novice
In addition to a little soreness from the first days of CrossFit, individuals can sometimes get discouraged by feeling like the “new kid on the block” and being surrounded by so many CrossFit veterans.
These feelings are perfectly natural, but it shouldn’t be used as an excuse to quit. Everyone starts out as a novice, even the seemingly superhuman people on YouTube. That kind of success doesn’t happen overnight but requires a fair bit of hard work and struggle.
In fact, if the first visits to CrossFit feel particularly trying—that’s how individuals know it’s working. If there was a magic pill that gave a six-pack overnight and boosted performance, we’d sell it. We’d take it, too. However, it takes hard work and patience—especially when just starting out.
Community Goes a Long Way in CrossFit Fitness
When training at CrossFit Funky, our members join a unique collection of business owners, stay-at-home moms, and airline pilots. No matter the station in life, these are people with a common goal of becoming the best version of themselves.
As a result, everyone is friendly and courteous to even the most inexperienced students of CrossFit. When everyone shares the same objective, it creates an environment of motivation and encouragement that’s difficult to find elsewhere.
Along with our regulars, our staff is comprised of an impressive collection of coaches who have 12 years of combined experience in personal training and CrossFit coaching. There are even a few record-holding athletes among the crew and a physical therapist who provides in-house treatment.
Cleanliness is Next to Fitness
At CrossFit Funky, we know how important it is for the gym to feel like a place our members enjoy visiting. If the environment wasn’t inviting, then it would cast a cloud over the training itself.
Therefore, we go out of our way to maintain a clean facility, made up of 6,300 square feet of gym space. Likewise, we diligently clean our equipment, which consists of 16 pieces of cardio equipment, six Olympic Weightlifting platforms, and the newest Rogue Equipment.
We want to make sure that our people can stay clean, too, so we provide two bathrooms, showers, and lockers for all of our clientele.
CrossFit Doesn’t Have to be Intimidating

We pride ourselves on creating a warm environment that’s as friendly as it is competitive.
Before long, even our beginners become the CrossFit experts who the newcomers are in awe of. All people have to do is take the first step—or lunge, in this case.
